Timing is Everything

In the training of and practice routine of a musician there a few things that make up the fundamental aspects of being a fantastic musician, one of those things is rhythm/timing (these two terms will be used interchangeably throughout this post). Timing is so important in the life and practice of a musician. So, the question is how do we develop our rhythm/timing?

One of the best things to do to work on your timing is invest in a metronome. Metronomes are powerful tools and are even often used in live performance and recording (click tracks). Metronomes come in all shapes and sizes and are very easily accessible to the modern-day musician.

My personal two favorite mobile device application metronomes are “Smart Metronome & Tuner” by developer Tomohiro Ihara and “TonalEnergy Tuner & Metronome” by developer TonalEnergy, Inc.

Although these app metronomes are convenient to use, I often like to stay off my phone during practice (unless it is needed for my task or exercise). I find that leaving my phone elsewhere and/or turning it on airplane mode assists me with concentration and focus. For this reason, I have found a few physical metronomes that I like to use. Below I have included affiliate links to these metronomes. I personally bought these and use this in my day-to-day practice as well as my teaching and instruction.

  2. Korg TM60BK Tuner Metronome, Black
